lacing a QR code on a piece of furniture — or on a piece of equipment — sounds trivial. You print the code, you stick it on the back, you are done. In practice, placement is the single biggest determinant of whether the next owner will be able to scan it three moves later. The wrong place for a code is anywhere visible, anywhere touched, and anywhere the maker expects to be re-finished.
Where it goes on furniture
nside the top drawer, on the side of the drawer box — never on the bottom of the drawer, which gets pulled out and set on the floor during a move. Inside the hanging rail of a wardrobe, on the underside. On the underside of a tabletop, near a corner that is not visible when the piece is in its normal position. Inside a door, on the back face of the door, near the hinge. Inside a cabinet, on the upper back surface where a dish stack will not press against it.
The principle is: the next owner only has so much patience, and only so much curiosity. They have to be able to find the QR without taking the piece apart. If the QR is on a face they cannot see, they will not find it. If the QR is on a face they can see, they will be annoyed that the maker stamped a barcode on their grandmother's sideboard. The right place is a face they can see, but not the front face, and not a place where the next owner is going to put a coaster.
Find the QR in under twenty seconds, without taking the piece apart, without lifting it. That is the bar.
Where it goes on trades equipment
nside the breaker-panel cover, on the inside face of the cover the user pops off. Inside the front panel of a furnace, on the inside rim of the panel where the panel's own gasket does not press against it. On the inside of an electrical disconnect, on the back of the disconnect's cover plate. Inside the door of a refrigeration compressor housing, on the hinge-side face. On the inside of a service panel that the technician would open before they did anything else.
The wrong place on trades equipment is the outside of the equipment housing. The next tenant of the space the equipment is in will paint over stickers. The next owner of the equipment will not know what they are looking at. The painter will not know what they are painting over. The right place is a face the technician is forced to open on the first visit, and that nobody else will see.
Material
nkjet-printed paper QR codes fail. The next owner of a household may move five times in ten years; the QR needs to survive that. We use a metal-engraved plate for furniture — a thin brass plate with the QR laser-etched, sized to a 1.25-inch square, with a felt or rubber backing so the plate does not rattle in transit. For trades equipment, a stainless plate held in by a pop-rivet is the right answer. The plate is far heavier than a sticker, but it does not fail.
The plate also has the advantage of looking like a maker's mark. A tiny brass stamp on the inside of a drawer reads as professional, not as advertising. A sticker reads as either.
Failure modes we have seen
care page QR stamped on the back of a dresser, sanded flat by the second owner because they thought it was a manufacturing defect. A refrigeration QR stuck on the outside of a condensing unit, painted flat by the building's next tenant during a hallway repaint. An HVAC QR on the front of a service panel, peeled off by the equipment's second owner because they thought it was a manufacturer's label.
All three of those would have been fine if the maker or the tech had spent six minutes thinking about where the plate or sticker was going to go. The plate inside the panel cover would have been fine. The plate under the tabletop, near the rear rail, would have been fine. The plate inside the breaker cover would have been fine.
A simple placement test
fter you have placed the QR, do this. Take the piece apart — or open the panel — and put it back together. Time yourself. If you cannot find the QR again in under twenty seconds, take the plate off and move it. The next owner has twenty seconds of patience, no tools, no maker on the phone. That is the bar.
Twenty seconds. Inside a face that is opened first. Off the front face. Out of the way of any finishing the next owner is going to do.
